Shades of Brilliance podcast with Cierra Venable

When I got the text from Cierra asking me to be a guest on her podcast my first thought was ‘Me?? really? What could I possibly share that would be useful for people to hear?’ But Cierra reassured me that with the years of creative and life experience I had and with the world current climate it was imperative to share our stories now. So We sat down and virtually discussed our experience at UAL and getting our MA in Design for Art Direction. Although we were in the course at separate times, we found parallels through our experience of this white supremacist system. Although we are grateful for the time we had there we also know that there is power in being honest about the powers that be and the effects they can have on the Black body and creative.

“London called, but at what cost? In this episode, Cierra and Caroline Japal unpack the quiet (and not-so-quiet) violences of being Black (American) women in the UK. The discuss the weight of representation, the brutal dynamics of art school, and for the love of God — the critiques. The empire never ended, and they’ve got stories to prove it.” — Cierra Venable, Shades of Brilliance Host
